Beeman & Urow, building on Krashen's acquisition of language theory, assert that the only way for language learners to truly master a language is to use it in concrete, meaningful contexts. So, I'm trying to take what I already think are strong learning activities and embed them in contexts that my first grade Explorers will find meaningful. I've had the privilege of attending two multi-day workshops with Cheryl Urow, and I deeply respect her understanding of linguistics, bilingualism, literacy, and the socio-political factors that influence the education of heritage Spanish speakers in the U.S. (all of these are discussed in the book!).
